GREAT OUTDOORS MONTH JUNE 2023
Formally designated in June 2019 by the US Senate, this celebration dates back to 1998 when it began as “Great Outdoors Week” under President Bill Clinton. Since 2008, state governors have joined in designating June as the month to commemorate the great outdoors, encouraging people to explore and enjoy the nation’s natural resources. It’s typically observed during the month of June. The initiative aims to highlight the importance of outdoor recreation, conservation, and environmental stewardship.
Throughout the month, numerous events and activities are organized across the country to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to experience and appreciate the outdoors. These may include guided hikes, nature walks, fishing derbies, educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and outdoor festivals. The goal is to foster a sense of adventure, promote physical fitness, and raise awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving the natural environment.
Great Outdoors Month also serves as an opportunity for government agencies, outdoor organizations, and community groups to collaborate and promote outdoor recreation and conservation initiatives. It’s a time to celebrate the natural beauty of the United States and encourage individuals and families to lead active and healthy lifestyles while enjoying the great outdoors.
Whether it’s enjoying the beauty of national parks or simply spending time in local green spaces, Great Outdoors Month encourages Americans to embrace the many benefits of outdoor recreation while fostering a sense of appreciation for the natural wonders of the country.
