FIVE EASY STEPS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF A TRADE SHOW
Trade shows are an indispensable way to find out about new innovations in your industry. But attending them can be frustrating and fruitless if you don’t make a plan of attack ahead of time. Below are 5 Steps to Make the Most Out of a Trade Show so you can be sure to get the most out of any trade show you attend.
- Set your intentions.
Are you:
- going to network and make connections;
- going to check out the latest innovations; or
- trying to solve a particular problem for your business?
It’s a good idea to keep your goals in mind as it’s incredibly easy to get overwhelmed and off track.
- Target specific vendors.
You have set your intentions now seek out the vendors who can help you achieve your goals. Don’ be shy. Contact vendors in advance and schedule appointments. This is particularly helpful with national trade shows because this may be the only time you get to connect face-to-face with a vendor.
- Schedule your time.
There are typically a few different things that you can spend your time doing at trade shows, like:
- Seeking out specific vendors;
- Attending seminars/demonstrations/info sessions; and/or
- Wandering to see what’s there.
It makes the most sense to start with the speakers since they tend to be at set times. Once you’ve identified the sessions you’d like to attend, build your schedule from there. Then you’ll have time to wander the floor to discover new things without being distracted or worried about making the next presentation. All of this information should be published in advance, making it easy to plan before you even leave your office.
- Be social.
Making new connections and learning new things are a huge reason to attend a show. You can meet, build relationships and gather information from:
- guest speakers,
- vendors, and
- fellow attendees.
These new relationships can serve you well after the trade show.
- Have fun!
Going to a trade show shouldn’t be all work. Sure, you’re there to contribute to the health of your business but it’s still a few days away from the grind. Most cities have a convention and visitors bureau. Visit their website in advance to select restaurants near your hotel and/or convention center, and maybe even plan a day to take in the sites.
